Downtown Revitalization Conference Set for May 19-21 in Port Townsend

The Washington State Department of Commerce’s 24th annual Downtown Revitalization Training Institute will take place May 19-21 in Port Townsend, Wash.

This popular conference brings together a group of specialists in the field of downtown revitalization, and is the only one of its kind in the state. The conference is open to staff and volunteers from organizations focusing on downtown economic development, downtown business and property owners, government leaders, and others with an interest in helping guide the future of their downtown. Attendees will learn downtown revitalization tools and techniques.

Sessions will be available for both beginners and those with experience. Topics include: small business success during challenging times, developing local business opportunities, downtown design essentials, shop local promotions, social networking for organizations, strengthening historic preservation efforts, and sustainable building design.

This year’s keynote presentation “Trends Affecting Downtown” will feature Kennedy Lawson Smith with the Community Land Use and Economics Group.  Smith is one of the foremost experts on commercial district revitalization and development, small independent businesses, and economically and environmentally sound community development.  She directed the National Trust’s Main Street Center for 13 years and has written numerous articles on the economic dynamics of traditional business districts.

The 2010 Downtown Revitalization Training Institute will include walking tours, lectures, workshops, and networking time. The second day of the conference features the annual “Excellence in Downtown Revitalization” awards presentation, recognizing outstanding accomplishments in downtown revitalization throughout the state.
